The annoying condition of Onychomycosis, or nail fungus, is a fungal infection of the nail bed. Although usually painless, it causes unsightly and embarrassing yellowing and thickening of the nails. It can occur on the fingernails, but is most often found on the toenails, particularly the big toe. Nail fungus generally begins with a white or yellow spot under the nail that quickly spreads throughout the entire nail. If left untreated, severe cases can cause misshapen nails or worse, separation of the nail from the nail bed.
Fungal infections are more common on the toenails. The inside of shoes is a perfect warm, moist environment for spores to replicate. The feet are also frequently exposed to fungus from showers, swimming pools and walking barefoot. It enters the nail through the cuticle, cut, or nail damage, and spreads upwards through the nail. Some people seem to be more susceptible to it than others, though it is not known if this is genetic or if it is lifestyle-related.
Nail fungus is difficult to treat because of the length of time it takes for the nail to grow out. Many people want to avoid the side effects of oral antifungal prescriptions, but most store-brand antifungal creams are not effective. There are several home remedies that have been used successfully for years. Most involve cleaning the area with some sort of astringents such as rubbing alcohol, peroxide, Listerine or white vinegar, and treating the fungus with tea tree or eucalyptus oil.
The most popular home remedy is the vicks vapor rub for nail fungus cure. File the nail lightly with an emery board crosswise and lengthwise to help the vapor rub adhere and to penetrate the nail. Then apply the vapor rub all over the nail and massage into the cuticle. Cover the nail with socks (or a glove) to avoid getting the vicks on bedsheets. Continue daily until the infected nail grows out. Although there is no scientific evidence for the vicks vapor rub cure, thousands of people have reported success with this treatment. Continue to keep the nail trimmed short as it grows, and keep the affected nail as dry as possible (exposure to air and dry conditions will help kill the fungus). This is an inexpensive and relatively safe remedy; however, it is not for people with diabetes or immune disorders. If the condition worsens or becomes painful, seek medic
al treatment.
